  • "No Trucks" Signs will return to E.Zia

    Success!

We got our signs back! Now, if you see regular offenders using Zia as a "cut-through" between Old Pecos and Old Santa Fe, please call in the time and trucking company to the SFPD so they can either plan a patrol, or call the trucking firm to warn the Dispatcher to re-route future deliveries.

Join me in thanking Councilor Heldmeyer for assisting me pursue this issue.

    Overview

When the city proposed to pave E. Zia to address the dust and maintenance issues from heavy through traffic between Old Pecos Trail and Old Santa Fe Trail, an agreement was made to install "no trucks" signs as part of the deal. Last summer the City Traffic Engineer John Nitzle removed the sign at the E. Zia / Old Pecos Trail end because he believed the street was not properly recorded in city ordinance, and could not be enforced.

After several months of working on this issue with Councilor Heldmeyer we succeeded in obtaining approval to re-install appropriate signage. As part of this process it turned out that the management of "no-trucks" signs citywide is a bit of a mess, with individual ordinance numbers and language that makes it very hard to keep track of and enforce.

In the long run, Public Works will probably group all "No-trucks" ordinances under ONE number, with different sub-sections for specific streets. Short-term, we may have to wait until the dust settles and the correct ordinance number can be painted on signs prior to installation. Once the signs are back in place, we can work with the Police and local trucking firms to get a handle on the heavy truck "through" traffic.

The information on this page was prepared by Dan Baker based on communications with John Nitzle, Councilor Heldmeyer and Mike Lujan as well as residents on E. Zia.
